New England Patriots backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has been linked to many NFL trade rumors since the offseason started. However, the latest speculations suggest that Garoppolo is staying in New England despite the interest from several teams.
One of the teams linked with Jimmy Garoppolo is the Cleveland Browns. The Browns need a quarterback and they are loaded with draft picks to acquire the 25-year-old backup from the Patriots. They are also linked with drafting North Carolina’s Mitch Trubisky but they have competition like the 49ers, Bears and Bills.
According to Pete Prisco of CBS Sports, the Patriots might be willing to part ways with Jimmy Garoppolo for the Browns’ 12th overall pick this year and a second-round pick next year. The two teams have discussed a potential Garoppolo trade at the NFL Combine but the Patriots view him as a great insurance just in case Tom Brady gets injured.
The Patriots are still looking for more ways to improve their already loaded roster via the draft. They don’t have a first-round pick this year after trading it to the New Orleans Saints for wide receiver Brandin Cooks. If they get the 12th overall pick, they could add another talent since this year’s draft is loaded.
However, NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported that the Patriots are not going to trade Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason, per ESPN. Garoppolo is expected to join New England’s training camp and the Patriots even intend to keep him beyond the 2017 NFL season.
Jimmy Garoppolo was the Patriots starter in their first two games last season when Tom Brady served his four-game suspension. In those two starts, both are wins and he completed 71 percent of his passes for 496 yards. He also threw for four touchdowns with no interceptions.
The Browns are also linked with trading up from the 12th overall pick to get Mitch Trubisky. There are even rumors stating that Cleveland is even contemplating drafting Trubisky over Myles Garrett as the first overall pick.
