Injured Wentz can remain an asset for Eagles

(STATS) – What the Philadelphia Eagles are asking next out of quarterback Carson Wentz is something the North Dakota State Bison know he will do well.

Eagles coach Doug Pederson confirmed Monday that Wentz suffered a season-ending ACL tear in his left knee during Sunday’s road win over the Los Angeles Rams.

A day after the injury, Pederson was still looking for contributions from Wentz. They won’t be as big as his MVP-caliber 3,296 passing yards and 33 touchdown passes through 13 games, but they can be important.

“A lot like Jordan Hicks and Jason Peters and these guys (who have been injured), he can be around and be in the meeting rooms,” Pederson said. “He can watch the tape. Even as much as being there on game day, and being another set of eyes for the quarterbacks, for Nick (Foles, the new starter). Just having his input and having him around the guys, too, it would be a big boost and, obviously, an opportunity for him now to kind of put the coaching hat on and to help Nick.”

At North Dakota State, Wentz was sidelined with a broken wrist midway through his redshirt senior season in 2015. The Bison were attempting to win a record fifth straight FCS national title and handed the starter’s role off to redshirt freshman Easton Stick.

Wentz instantly became a mentor to Stick and provided advice to him and the coaching staff while they won eight straight games without him, including three in the playoffs. He returned to start and lead the Bison past Jacksonville State 37-10 in the final, winning the game’s outstanding player award for the second consecutive year.

Said NDSU coach Chris Klieman: “When Carson got hurt, to Carson’s credit, he stuck with Easton every week and watched film with him and was on the sideline with us on a headset and visiting with him before series and after series.”
